Marketing director Andrew Peters, 44, saw this posting on a Singapore classifieds internet site today (Dec14) from a 19-year-old woman called Jesica - putting her unborn baby up for adoption.
"I was shocked," said the STOMPer, who's from Australia.
"I was checking my own ad on the site inkiti.com Singapore and clicked on the most popular postings and this one showed up," he told STOMP today.
"It's the first tme I have seen something like this. The woman gave an address - Ang Mo Kio. If it is a genuine appeal, then she could be desperate."
In the posting, Jesica wrote:
"Hi,I call Jesica, and am 19 yrs old and i am 7month pregnant and i and my boy friend have decided to give the baby out for adoption because of lack of means to bring up the baby,so we came to a compromise that we will give the baby for adoption to any family that is ready to take good are of the baby and will give the baby the love, care and attention that the baby will need from them.Am 7 month old and very soon i will pot to birth.Contact me for more informations. Thanks."
Andrew said he was very concerned after he read this.
"My worry is for her - that she could be desperate and is at a loss about what to do. By going to a place like the internet, she has exposed herself to all sorts of dangers, especially from child predators.
"If she wants to give up the baby for adoption, she can go to the proper channels, like a social service agency, religious organisation or The Salvation Army," he said.
"Looking for prospective adoptive parents via the web means you have no idea who is out there. Predators may try to extort money.
"Even if the child is put up for adoption, there is no guarantee of background checks and follow-up actions. We won't know for sure if the child is in good hands or how the child is faring after that," he said.
Andrew said the cynical side of him makes him wonder if the posting could be from someone in the "baby trade" operating in the guise of a mother-to-be.
"In the US, they have lots of babies being traded. For all you know, this may be from someone who can just whip up a baby for sale," he said.
STOMP is contacting the authorities for comments.
